There was nothing like the moment in 10th Avenue Freeze Out when Bruce introduces “The Big Man”. The line goes, “changes made uptown, and the big man joined the band…” Every arena errupted, it was pure joy, madness, beaming love, musical elation. That rippin’ Tenor Sax adding fuel to the fire. It was in an instant, a snapshot of what Rock and Roll was all about. In later years as the catalog grew and introductions happened over different songs, the reaction was always the same. In Bruce’s band, Clarence was always the fave. The blinding smile, the signature sound, the saxophone strapped around his neck…The man could even steal the spotlight from Santa in the opening lines over a couple piano chords…we’re gonna go listen to some live Bruce and drink to Clarence. From his first “Spirit” with Bruce to his last guest spot with Lady Gaga on Edge of Glory there was no one like him. That non-stop earth quakin’, soul shakin’ E-Street Band will never be the same. Thanks for the smiles, across the decades and miles. Rest In Peace. Clarence Clemons 1942 – 2011
